2015 Opening Night – Northwest League Baseball

It’s that time of year again. The beginning of another summer season means more time outside with your friends and family. It also indicates the start of the Northwest League’s Short A baseball season. If you’re living in the Northwest and are looking for some cheap, family friendly baseball without breaking the bank by travelling to a place like Safeco Field and watch an underachieving major league team. The Short Season “A” league has many players that were picked up in the MLB draft a few weeks ago, and this year looks to have a high number of high draft picks starting the season in the NWL. Of course, we can’t forget the returning players who are working to hone their baseball playing skills.

The teams this year are the same as last year, but with some new MLB affiliations. Here’s a look at the teams, their divisions, and their Major League affiliates:

North Division:

Everett AquaSox (Seattle Mariners) – Everett, WA
Spokane Indians (Texas Rangers) – Spokane, WA
Tri-City Dust Devils (San Diego Padres) – Pasco, WA [Formerly the affiliate of the Colorado Rockies]
Vancouver Canadians (Toronto Blue Jays) – Vancouver, BC

South Division:

Boise Hawks (Colorado Rockies) – Boise, ID [Former affiliate of the Chicago Cubs]
Eugene Emeralds (Chicago Cubs) – Eugene, OR [Former affiliate of the San Diego Padres]
Hillsboro Hops (Arizona Diamondbacks) – Hillsboro, OR
Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (San Francisco Giants) – Keizer, OR

The NWL Official Site listed the following stories to keep an eye out for this season:

  • The new affiliations for the Dust Devils, Hawks, and Emeralds could test the “loyalty for NWL fans when returning players and managers suit up in the very uniforms they aimed to defeat in 2014.”
  • Five of the eight NWL teams went through managerial changes from the 2014 Season. Three of these managerial changes were due to the Hawks, Emeralds and Dust Devils switching affiliates, therefore the teams had to switch to managers that were hired by the major league organization. The most noteworthy managerial hiring was Hillsboro’s hiring of former MLB player Shelley Duncan.
  • Number 1 overall pick Dansby Swanson (Arizona) will suit up for the Hops this year, making him a player to watch and see how his career unfolds.
  • Hillsboro looks to defend its NWL title. This was the first title in Hillsboro’s history, as they won a championship when the team was located in Yakima back in 2000.
  • The 2015 NWL All Star Game will take place in Spokane and will offer a bit of a change up. Instead of North vs South, it’ll be the Northwest League All-Stars versus the Pioneer League’s All-Stars
